The best experiences in life tend to find us when we least expect it. As someone who spends so much time mentally preparing for the worst, my most joyous moments have come in the form of unexpected and memorable chaos which has taught me to live life in the moment.

This day started out as quite a good one, I was on a trip to Denver Colorado with the other students of my fellowship. We decided to explore the snow-covered mountains, something foreign to all of us being that we come from the desert. At this moment I found myself particularly entranced by a lake we encountered at the peak of our hike. There was something so beautifully organic about this entire scene; the crisp hair hitting my face, the sound of the gentle waves as the water flowed. This was a perfect day, but of course there is no such thing as perfection. What followed was a series of chaotic events that culminated in an unforgettable adventure for my group and I. Remarkably, even when things looked the bleakest I found myself enjoying the chaos because it was as if someone had hit a switch in my brain and my anxiety was gone. I knew that everything would work out and ultimately we would all be fine and have quite a story to recount when we returned. The lesson I learned that day was that my authentic self, being who I am at my core, enjoys the chaotic unpredictability of life and how everything can change in one single moment. Putting on a carefully curated facade of craving nothing but stability and predictability is exhausting but the right people won't have expectations of what you "should" want in life, they'll want for you what you want for yourself and in my case that's freedom.
